Amanda Calhoun
Artist Bio
Amanda Calhoun is a working artist in Alpine, Texas where she creates one-of-a-kind ceramic art pieces.
Originally, from Corpus Christi, Texas, Amanda started her journey with ceramics at Aloe Tile Works in 1999. She worked for the small tile company for fourteen years and developed her love of clay and color.
During this time, she attended Texas A&M – Corpus Christi where she received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with a focus in ceramics and printmaking. In 2013, she and her artist husband, Gregory Tegarden, moved to Alpine, Texas. Together they create in clay and enjoy West Texas sunsets. Amanda’s work is chiefly influenced by classic movies, vintage tourism, and food. She strives to make pieces that can appeal to anyone and that celebrate the small beauties in life.

Artist Statement
My work is greatly influenced by the past. I spent my childhood immersed in classic films and television shows. Little did I know at the time that the moving pictures would define my creative outlet in the future. I prefer to use imagery that is instantly recognizable to all such as desserts and travel scenery. I embrace kitsch. My work is meant to be a quick getaway, like watching a film, where one can step into a sunny world away from the reality of today. I strive for a smile from a viewer.
I work in clay. Having worked for a handmade tile studio for fourteen years, I developed a love and a skill set for making tile. I am a process driven artist that enjoys the tactile sensation of carving, painting, and drawing on clay. My work is full of color and fired to ∆06 (low fire) in an electric kiln.
