Roots in the Land

Cynthia’s artistic journey began in the open landscapes of eastern Nebraska. Growing up on a working farm, she spent her formative years raising and showing cattle and Quarter Horses. These early experiences—rooted in the dirt, the weather, and the animals she cared for—instilled a deep-seated love for the rural West that remains the primary pulse of her work today. Even then, she was rarely without a sketchbook, capturing the spirit of the land and its inhabitants long before she understood it as a lifelong calling.

From Architecture to Fine Art

Before transitioning fully into fine art in 2016, Cynthia enjoyed a distinguished career as a professional architect. This background provides a unique structural foundation for her paintings. Her work often mirrors the architectural process.  Paintings begin with careful planning and a studied palette, then evolve through a vibrant, intuitive painting technique. The combination of precision and painterly abstraction allows her to explore man’s interaction with nature and how ultimately nature impacts what man creates.

Artistic Philosophy: The Quiddity of the Subject

Described as "atmospheric," Cynthia’s work unearths the beauty and truth within the visible world often focusing on the quiet details of the landscape that others might overlook. She is best known for her landscapes in oil, though she remains an accomplished practitioner in pastel, gouache, and graphite.

Her central theme is the "quiddity"—the essential nature—of her subjects. By layering pigment and thought, she strives to capture the tension between frailty and resilience. For Cynthia, the painting process is an emotional evolution; more important than the subject itself is the moment she shares that spark of inspiration with the viewer, inviting them to see the extraordinary within the ordinary.

Dedicated Study & Mentorship

Cynthia’s technical mastery is the result of a lifetime of dedicated study. She has been deeply influenced by the mentorship of renowned painters Skip Whitcomb (Colorado) and Douglas Fryer (Utah). Under their guidance, she has been challenged to refine her unique voice, balancing traditional techniques with a contemporary, pensive approach to the landscape.
