The Big Bend Arts Council invites all members and prospective members to a Holiday Social on Wednesday, Dec. 14th, 6-8 p.m., at Gallery on the Square, 115 W. Holland Ave. A short business meeting will update members on forthcoming BBAC shows and programs. Family and friends are welcome to attend. The Big Bend Arts Council and Gallery on the Square appreciates the support and patronage of the Alpine community and those visiting during ArtWalk, 2011. Spirits where high and sales were good against the backdrop of artist demonstrations, jazz music, and complimentary wine. The gallery's debut on W. Holland Street was overwhelmingly successful. Thanks to all BBAC and gallery members for your contributions and participation. Gallery on the Square (GOTS) is the showcase gallery of the Big Bend Arts Council. Founded in 2004, the Big Bend Arts Council (BBAC) is a non-profit organization whose mission is to support the arts in the Big Bend region through fundraising and events to promote artists and art education. The Gallery on the Square was formed in 2009 and located in Old Town Square in Alpine; hence, the gallery’s name. Gallery on the Square moved off the square in May, 2011, to its present location on 115 W. Holland Avenue. The gallery is a cooperative of 27 area artists, and member artists share the responsibility for running the gallery. The hours of operation are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily; closed on Wednesdays.
During Alpine's ArtWalk event, Nov. 18-19, 2011, the BBAC conducts its annual membership drive and encourages all who appreciate and wish to support the arts in our region to join. Annual membership dues are $25. The BBAC also mounts a Members’ Exhibit at the Gallery on the Square. In addition to gallery artists, the Members’ Exhibit gives all BBAC members an opportunity to display and sell their work. Out of town visitors will see an impressive array of artistic talent and creativity and will have the opportunity to meet the artists at the gallery each evening of ArtWalk.
For ArtWalk 2011, the Gallery on the Square will feature artist demonstrations on the hour, starting at 6:00 p.m. On Friday, Diane Baylor will demonstrate her jewelry technique with silver wire wrapping at 6:00 p.m. Anne Eckley will give a demonstration of the intricate process of thread art at 7:00 p.m. Jim Bob Salazar will show how a potter throws pots on a wheel at 8:00 p.m. On Saturday evening, Maria LeJeune will demonstrate how she crochets wire and gems to produce jewelry at 6:00 p.m. Petei Guth will demonstrate the loom weaving process for her handmade shawls at 7:00 p.m. Jim Bob Salazar will give a second demonstration of throwing pots on the potter’s wheel at 8:00 p.m.
West Texas National Bank welcomes the work of BBAC members in its lobby. The bank has 12 easels on which work in any medium may be displayed for one month, starting on the first working day and ending on the last working day. This is a high-traffic area and affords a wonderful opportunity to showcase your work
Following the month at the bank, the artist moves her or his work to Big Bend Regional Medical Center for one month, starting the first working day and ending the last working day. Work at the hospital hangs in the hallway leading to the patients' wing; therefore it must be framed in a way that allows hanging.
The schedule is filled for the remainder of 2011. Artists wishing to exhibit in the WTNB/BBRMC spaces beginning in January 2012 are asked to contact Kathy Bork,
